The axis counts working days, so weekends are skipped. Public holidays are not applied — add them to your durations, or read the finish date as the best case.

Gantt chart example — a seven-task project

The example loaded above is a small delivery project: kick-off, design, procurement, build, installation, handover and a go-live sign-off. It runs for 43 working days, which is the sum of the five tasks on the longest chain: 5 + 10 + 15 + 8 + 5.

Procurement is the useful one to look at. It takes 20 days against 25 for design and build together, so it has five days of float, shown as the pale tail after its bar. It can slip by up to a week without moving the finish date. Every other task is on the critical path and has none.

The diamond at the end is a milestone: a task with zero days. It marks a decision or a handover rather than work, and it sits on the day the task before it finishes.

How to read a Gantt chart

Each row is a task. The bar starts where the task starts and its length is its duration, so you can read the whole plan from left to right.

  • Solid blue bars are on the critical path: no float, so any slip moves the finish date.
  • Light blue bars have float. The grey tail after each shows how far it can move before it starts to matter.
  • Arrows are dependencies. Each runs from the end of a task to the start of the one that waits for it.
  • The dashed line is the earliest the project can finish.

The date along the top is a real calendar date, counted in working days. Saturdays and Sundays are skipped, so a task that spans a weekend does not look longer than it is.

Gantt chart template in Excel — using the CSV

The CSV download carries every task with its start, finish, float and whether it is critical, so you can keep working in a spreadsheet if that is where your team lives. It opens directly in Excel.

A common way to draw a Gantt in Excel is a stacked bar chart, with the start dates as an invisible first series and the durations as the second. For that, use the Start and Finish columns rather than the working-day durations. Working days leave out weekends, so plotting them as calendar lengths makes any bar that spans a weekend look too short.

What this online Gantt chart does and does not do

It is built to answer one question quickly: what does this schedule look like, and which tasks govern the date. It does that well. Some things it leaves out on purpose.

  • Finish-to-start dependencies only. A task starts when everything it depends on has finished. There is no lead, lag or start-to-start link.
  • Public holidays are not applied. Malaysia’s are part federal and part state, several move with the lunar and Islamic calendars, and some are declared at short notice. A built-in list would be wrong for most people without them seeing it. Add holidays into your durations, or read the finish date as the best case.
  • Up to 40 tasks per chart. Past that a chart stops being readable on one screen and the plan wants splitting into phases.
  • No resources. Two tasks with float can still queue behind each other if one person has to do both, and a network cannot see that.
  • Nothing is stored. The chart is drawn in your browser and the task list is not sent anywhere, which also means it is gone when you close the page. Download before you leave.

A chart shows the plan; it does not tell you how much to trust it. These tools work from the same task list:

Questions

›Is this Gantt chart generator free?

Yes. There is no sign-up, no limit on charts and nothing to install. It runs in your browser.

›What is a Gantt chart?

A bar chart of a schedule. Each task is a bar along a timeline, so you can see when it starts, how long it runs and what has to finish before it.

Its strength is showing the whole plan at a glance. Its weakness is that on its own it does not show which tasks actually govern the finish date, which is why this one marks the critical path.

›How do I make a Gantt chart in Excel from this?

Download the CSV and open it in Excel. A common method is a stacked bar chart with start dates as an invisible first series and durations as the second.

Use the Start and Finish columns for the bar lengths. The working-day durations in the file skip weekends, so a calendar chart drawn from them will understate any task that spans one.

›Can it show dependencies between tasks?

Yes. Put a task’s predecessor IDs in the “Depends on” column, separated by commas, and an arrow is drawn from the end of each predecessor to the start of that task. Only finish-to-start links are supported.

›What do the pale tails after some bars mean?

Float, also called slack. It is how long that task can slip before it delays the whole project. A task with no tail is on the critical path.

›Does it account for public holidays?

No. Weekends are skipped; holidays are not. Malaysian holidays are partly federal and partly state, several move with the lunar and Islamic calendars, and some are gazetted at short notice, so a fixed list would be quietly wrong for most users.

Add any holidays into the durations, or treat the finish date as the best case.

›Is my project saved?

No. The chart is drawn in your browser and your tasks are not sent anywhere. Download the PNG or CSV before closing the page.
